Nobody is taken in by all these lures… marketing, it's [all just] hot air!”

An interesting expression came up in some content we were preparing this morning.

It is the expression ne pas être dupe de which means to not be taken in by (something), to not be fooled by (something/someone) or to not be duped by (something/someone). Let's consider some examples:

We might say:

(dupe = adjectif)
The people are not taken in by all these promises from the government.
= The correctors weren't duped/fooled by the plagiarism of several candiates.
= Cycling authorities were fooled/duped/taken in by Lance Amstrong's doping/drug-taking for a long time.
